Ip Man 4, Star Wars, and more stellar films to watch in December
Can you believe it's the final month of the year already? And that's not all, it's also the final month of the 2010s! The 2020s are almost upon us, and we've got a pretty good slate of movies to usher in the new decade. There's lots of action-packed star power, with Donnie Yen's final Ip Man film (Ip Man 4, Dec 20), and Dwayne Johnson's return to Jumanji (Jumanji: The Next Level, now showing). Animals also take centrestage, including close encounters with the feline kind (Cats, Dec 26), the feathered kind (Spies In Disguise, Dec 25) and the wooly kind (A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, Dec 12). And last but not least, there's a small little film called Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (Dec 19) with laser swords and spaceships that sounds pretty interesting. Jumanji: The Next Level (Now showing) Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Danny Glover, Danny DeVito Director: Jake Kasdan Spencer gets sucked back into the Jumanji game, and Bethany, Martha and Fridge follow him in to rescue him. However, the game is busted, resulted in Spencer's grandfather Eddie and his friend Milo getting sucked in as well. To make things worst, the game is not the same as it was before, with new challenges and adventures ahead for the team. Why you should watch it: From our review: "The most fun part of this new Jumanji franchise is watching the four avatars channeling the personalities of their players, and this time around, the highlight is watching Johnson as a crotchety old man." It's also an entertaining addition to the franchise that is more of a bonus round than a 'next level'. A Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (Dec 12) Cast: Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes, Kate Harbour Director: Will Becher, Richard Phelan Down at Mossy Bottom Farm, Shaun and the Flock face a new challenge - an alien who is lost and just wants to return home. While Shaun helps the little alien, The Farmer comes up with a plan to make money by exploiting the UFO craze in town. Why you should watch it: Because he's Shaun the Sheep, he's Shaun the Sheep, and he even mucks about with those who cannot bleat. So keep it in mind, he's one of a kind, and life's a treat with Shaun the Sheep. Oh, and it's also the most fun you'll ever have in a movie with hardly any dialogue. The Good Liar (Dec 12) Cast: Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, Russell Tovey Director: Bill Condon Career con artist Roy Courtnay meets wealthy widow Betty McLeish online and decides to make her his next target. But as she opens her life and home to him, Roy finds himself caring more about her. Why you should watch it: Just having Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren in the same movie is good enough reason for us, but we also love a good con artist movie, so this should do the, er, trick. Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (Dec 19) Director: J.J. Abrams Cast: Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson The ninth, and final film of the epic Skywalker Saga, in which Rey, Finn, Poe, BB-8 and the rest of the Resistance make their final stand against the First Order, led by Kylor Ren. Why you should watch it: Well, this is it. The final film of the Skywalker Saga, which began with 1977's Star Wars. The Last Jedi may have gotten less than stellar reviews from hardcore fans, but this promises to redeem the saga and could arguably be the most epic Star Wars film of all time. Ip Man 4: The Finale (Dec 20) Cast: Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Danny Chan Kwok-kwan Director: Wilson Yip Wing Chun Grandmaster Ip Man travels abroad to San Francisco, where a student of his has opened a Wing Chun school, upsetting the local martial arts community. Why you should watch it: Well, this is it. The final film of Donnie Yen's Ip Man saga, which began with 2008's Ip Man. Last time around, we got to see Yen trade blows with Mike Tyson, but this time, his opponent is Scott Adkins, whose experience in the Hong Kong martial arts scene should make his showdown with Ip Man an even more exciting affair. Spies In Disguise (Dec 25) Cast: Will Smith, Tom Holland, Rashida Jones, Karen Gillan, DJ Khaled Director: Nick Bruno, Troy Quane Lance Sterling, the world's greatest super spy, goes after powerful technology-based terrorist Tristan McFord with the help of Walter, a genius inventor who creates most of the gadgets Lance uses on his missions. But after drinking one of Walter's experimental serums, Lance is turned into a pigeon and forced to, er, wing it. Why you should watch it: The premise itself is absurd enough to work, and having Will Smith and Tom Holland voicing the main characters is a major plus point. Cats (Dec 26) Cast: James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson Director: Tom Hooper Over the course of a single night, a tribe of cats called the Jellicles make what is known as "the Jellicle choice" and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. Why you should watch it: Yes, the cats look a little weird, but Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical is a true classic, the cast is star-studded, and it should be worth it just to hear Jennifer Hudson belt out Memory. The Cave (Dec 26) Cast: Ekawat Niratvorapanya Director: Tom Waller In 2018, a junior football team made up of twelve boys aged 11 to 16 years old, went missing along with their 25-year-old assistant coach while exploring a cave. This is the story how international and Thai rescue teams came together to pull off a miraculous rescue mission. Why you should watch it: The rescue mission was a news event that captivate the entire world, so this would be a good chance to see what is said to be the 'untold story' behind the rescue mission.
